Genetic parameters of husk spot resistance in macadamia breeding families

چکیده

Abstract Husk spot caused by the Pseudocercospora macadamiae fungus induces premature abscission of fruit in many industry standard macadamia cultivars. Fungicides and other management strategies add to farm costs, thus breeding for varietal resistance is important. Genetic parameters husk symptom expression had not previously been estimated. To guide selection methods field resistance, over 300 open-pollinated seedlings 32 families 24 parent genotypes were inoculated, seven traits evaluated. Narrow-sense broad-sense heritabilities estimated, values predicted, correlations between trait pairs tested significance. The with highest necrotic lesion number per ( H 2 = 0.41–0.59; h 0.21–0.30) incidence 0.19–0.27; 0.17–0.24). Breeding two highly correlated (r 0.98; p < 0.001), suggesting that either could be used indirectly select other. All expressed symptoms some degree, however, symptom-induced low clones progeny cultivar ‘HAES791’. Necrotic also promising ‘HAES246’ Australian Macadamia Program elite selection, ‘BAM263’. Having identified as potentially partially resistant, these selections can now further evaluated parents new populations.

Effect of breeding structure on population genetic parameters in Drosophila.

The breeding structure of populations has been neglected in studies of Drosophila, even though Wright and Dobzhansky's pioneering work on the genetics of natural populations was an attempt to tackle what they regarded as an essential factor in evolution. We compared the breeding structure of sympatric populations of D. melanogaster and D. simulans, two sibling species that are widely used in ev...

Genetic Parameters and Their Use in Swine Breeding

The importance of decreasing costs of production increases as the swine industry becomes more competitive. Costs of production can be decreased through an organized selection program focused on genetic improvement in economic traits. The most competitive producers will use a swine-breeding program, which minimizes cost of production and maximizes return on investment. A clear understanding of g...

Genetic parameters for a maternal breeding goal in beef production.

New maternal breeding values have been developed for use in UK beef evaluations. To undertake multitrait BLUP evaluations, it is necessary to have a full covariance matrix. This study outlines the approach taken to construct the full covariance matrices for the four beef breeds that most widely contribute to suckler beef cows in the United Kingdom. The maternal traits investigated were age at f...

ASAS/ADSA Breeding and Genetics: Genetic Parameters of Beef Cattle

Representative models of U.S. dairy (WI, CA) and beef (AL, TX, UT, VA, WI) production systems were constructed to sum the land use requirements, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and product outputs. Total GHG emissions expressed, as CO2 equivalents per unit of milk were 1.4 and 1.5 kg/kg, while the production of beef as live weight at the farm gate resulted in from 13.8 to 18.2 kg/kg. The 2 dairy...
